The new donation will help advance UTGI's goals of providing one thousand prosthetic devices to those who cannot afford them. In 2021, UTGI has already delivered seventy prosthetic limbs
Arrow Electronics, a global technology provider, is funding the donation of five prosthetic arms within the next two years to support UTGI's mission (Unlimited Tomorrow Global Initiative) to make prosthetic limbs more accessible to those who need them. UTGI is a non-profit organization affiliated with Unlimited Tomorrow, which makes a more customized, more comfortable and reliable 3D printed prosthetic arm than traditional prosthetic arms, and for which Arrow will also provide support services.
Weighing just 1.5 pounds, the bionic prosthetic arms made by Unlimited Tomorrow are designed as a mirror image of the individual's missing limb and come in several hundred skin tones. The cost is approximately $8,000 each compared to the $80,000 required for each traditional device.
Unlimited Tomorrow's prosthetic arm, known as TrueLimb, uses highly precise sensors embedded in the socket of an individual's residual limb to detect and record muscle data. This data then controls a series of grips and movements. The limb also vibrates when it comes into contact with objects, providing users with a sense of touch, making operation more intuitive.
Unlimited Tomorrow's technology was presented at the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Arrow guaranteed the company the initial design phases, as well as the engineering and supply chain phases.
Arrow's new donation will help advance UTGI's goals of providing one thousand prosthetic devices to those who cannot afford them. In 2021, UTGI has already delivered seventy prosthetic limbs.
