This strategic alliance will help develop sustainable solutions such as reusing heat generated by data centers or using alternative energy sources
Vertiv (NYSE: VRT), a global provider of critical digital infrastructure and continuity solutions, announces a new partnership with RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, a leading research institute and innovation partner. Vertiv enters the data center systems technologies partnership program at platinum level, joining founding partners such as Facebook, Ericsson, Vattenfall, ABB, LTU and the Norrbotten region.
The research center of RISE, a Swedish state-owned institute supported by EU funds, is based in Luleå, Sweden. Collaborating with universities, businesses and public sector bodies, RISE carries out industrial research and innovation activities with the aim of promoting sustainable growth, strengthening the competitiveness and renewal of the sector.
Through the partnership with RISE Vertiv will particularly support the Infrastructure and Cloud research & test Environment (ICE), an experimental center for data centers that allows access to high-level studies and research, as well as RISE publications and verifications, as well as participation in smaller research and projects.
The key factor in this collaboration is the advanced test environment that includes data center modules, climate and thermal enclosures, wind tunnels, test beds for liquid cooling and edge systems technologies, and the ability to collect and analyze all data resulting from tests and experiments.
"RISE confirms their technological leadership in applied research, which qualifies them as an ideal partner for Vertiv. This collaboration will help us lead our industry towards a new era of sustainable large-scale cloud data centers, edge and enterprise applications," he said Stephan Liang, CTO Vertiv.
“RISE is playing a leading role in promoting sustainability across Europe and Vertiv is ideally placed to provide cutting-edge engineering solutions for the data center industry and beyond,” he said Giordano Albertazzi, president of Vertiv EMEA. "Data centers play a crucial role in the digital infrastructure sector, where efficiency and sustainability are becoming increasingly important. Technologies, systems and components must be designed, developed, tested and verified before being put on the market and our partnership with RISE will be an important piece of this journey".
Vertiv also supports the multiple initiatives promoted by RISE for the recovery of excess heat generated by data centers and its reuse in various applications, such as for agri-food and vertical agricultural plants, for biomass drying or district heating systems, where a recent feasibility study aims to reach a delivery water temperature (SWT) of 90°-95° C. Other joint Vertiv-RISE research projects include load balancing and full lifecycle assessment of data centers and all their components, machine learning of homomorphic cryptography, digital infrastructure automation and self-healing systems, fuel cells, a digital carbon meter for end users, new cooling methods and thermal management systems that support heat reuse and the circular economy.
"We want to be close to the needs of the industry and this partnership helps dialogue and mutual collaboration. This way we can continue to develop our thought leadership together with our partners," he said Tor Björn Minde, Director ICE Data Center at RISE.
The collaboration with RISE is the latest in a series of initiatives that Vertiv has launched on the subject of sustainability and, more generally, ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance). In fact, Vertiv is also part of the Sustainable Digital Infrastructure Alliance (SDIA) and the European Data Centre Association (EUDCA) and contributes to Climate Neutral Data Centre Pact which aims to meet the European Commission's goal for zero-impact data centers by 2030. Vertiv and RISE are also members ofE2P2 Tech Consortium, a leader in the development of low-carbon fuel cells to power data centers.
