Vertiv provides a complete solution to enable energy savings in the main buildings of Telefónica's backbone and edge network. The collaboration will allow an average energy saving of 20% for each Telefónica telco site in Spain
Vertiv (NYSE: VRT), a global provider of critical digital infrastructure and continuity solutions, expands its collaboration with Telefónica, a leading telecommunications company, to promote energy efficiency. Under the agreement, Telefónica expects to save approximately 45 GWh of electricity every year, over three years, equal to the energy consumption of at least 13,000 apartments in Spain. Vertiv will provide a turnkey solution to enable energy savings in several areas of Telefónica's network core sites in Spain.
The agreement is an expansion of the collaboration started in 2018, which began as a pilot project to reduce the energy consumption of one of the most important focal points of the Telefónica network in Madrid. As Telefónica reports, the initiative was successful, achieving an average reduction of 20% in total energy consumption and, as part of the so-called 'Phase 1' of the agreement, the collaboration is expanded to cover 40 of the most important core sites of the Telefónica network, distributed throughout Spain.
The agreement between Vertiv and Telefónica provides for the creation of an innovative model called Energy Savings as a Service (ESaaS), which involves the involvement of a partner experienced in the production of technology, who is committed to creating, managing and maintaining the critical infrastructure. The main objective is to reduce the energy consumed and therefore CO₂ emissions. Vertiv's services are designed to provide a turnkey solution, updating Telefónica's most important infrastructures with efficient support services for critical networks and managing their performance and related maintenance.
One of the key aspects of the agreement is the management of maintenance interventions by Vertiv, which allows it to optimize the efficiency of the infrastructure at all sites. Vertiv is responsible for carrying out corrective and preventive maintenance using cutting-edge technologies. Vertiv is committed to promoting artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to monitor data and infrastructure and therefore be able to prevent potential malfunctions. In this way it will be possible to extend the life cycle of IT systems and increase the energy efficiency of Telefónica's network.
Pablo Ledesma, director of Network, Services and IT Engineering and Operations at Telefónica Spain, says: "The project poses many challenges, one of which is ensuring specialized maintenance of the infrastructure. But it also offers many advantages, allowing us to have the most advanced and cutting-edge technologies to enable the implementation of cloud and edge services. In the project we also want to improve the air conditioning systems in all telecommunications operational sites that provide Telefónica services to customers, such as fiber networks or mobile networks, to achieve maximum energy savings.”
Karsten Winther, president of Vertiv in Europe, Middle East and Africa, highlights: "In addition to the benefit of reducing CO₂ emissions, the model also has a positive financial impact. Telefónica expects to reduce both energy costs and CO₂ emissions, instructing Vertiv to focus on optimization and allowing Telefónica to invest 100% of resources in its core business."
In addition to the core network sites that were optimized in 2023, Vertiv will help improve the efficiency of a further 10 Telefónica sites across Spain in 2024, including Madrid, Barcelona, Zaragoza, Coruña, Malaga and Valencia. As Telefónica reports, the results obtained so far are in line with the objectives set and work is already underway to extend the scope of the collaboration to other companies in the Telefónica group.
Vertiv is a highly experienced partner who knows our infrastructure very well, and is therefore the right company to carry out this innovative project", comments Enrique Blanco, Global CTIO of Telefónica. "The initiative will help us pursue our energy and emissions objectives, such as: improving energy efficiency with the aim of reducing the indicator of energy consumption per traffic unit (MWh/PB) by 90% by 2025, reducing by 90% emissions classified as Scope 1 and 2 by 2030, become a zero-emission company by 2040 across the entire supply chain. We are aware that the best kilowatt is the one we don't consume, but we don't want to stop here and we will expand this effective project to as many of our locations as possible."
"The pioneering model has been successfully implemented in collaboration with Telefónica and is replicable in other locations and countries, so that other organizations can benefit from greater efficiency and cost reduction. Vertiv is ideally positioned to help companies reduce their energy consumption by providing state-of-the-art critical infrastructure, technology and skilled professionals", concludes Karsten Winther.
