Cryptominers and Android malware are decreasing, according to ESET telemetry, web threats are rising in the first quarter of 2020. The period dominated by COVID-19.
ESET, a global leader in the cybersecurity market, has released the Q1 2020 Threat Report. With the containment imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic, cyber criminals have changed their strategies, finding new ways to profit from changing habits in people's lives and business disruptions in companies. During the lockdown, ESET researchers, engineers and security experts stepped up efforts to combat malware attacks and make the internet safe.
The ESET Threat Report for the first quarter of 2020 summarizes the commitment, progress and results obtained by the multinational company.
In March, ESET detected an increase in scams and malware using the pandemic as bait. “It is clear that cybercriminals have started to capitalize on people's fears and need for information,” he commented Roman Kováč, Chief Research Officer at ESET.
A substantial increase in some threats has been detected, in particular from the web, a possible side effect of the lockdown due to Coronavirus. The first quarter also highlighted the continued growth of stalkerware. While, on the contrary, some types of threats, such as cryptominers and Android malware, decreased compared to the previous quarter.
ESET Research also continues to monitor threats and vulnerabilities related to the pandemic. The First Quarter Report shows an overview of the most important research projects: the detection of new operations of the infamous Winnti Group and Turla; the discovery of Kràk, a new vulnerability affecting encryption in over a billion Wi-Fi devices; the identification of the mode of action of Stantinko's new cryptomining module.
