The Report shows the progress in cybersecurity research
ESET, a global leader in the cybersecurity market, has released its Q3 2020 Threat Report, highlighting key data from detection systems and showcasing advancements in cybersecurity research, including never-before-seen and exclusive updates. Reports and results were presented at the virtual event “ESET European Cyber Security Day – Towards a secure post-Covid future”.
After months of breaches related to COVID-19, the Report shows that cybercriminals seem to have returned to their usual tactics in recent times. Nonetheless, one sector in which the risks remain particularly high remains that of remote working.
ESET telemetry showed a further increase in targeted Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) attacks, continuing to grow throughout the first half of the year.
While the number of unique clients targeted grew by more than a third, the total attack attempts increased by 140%. “The continued increase in RDP attacks could be the result of the growing number of poorly protected systems connected to the Internet during the pandemic, or the entry of new malicious actors inspired by ransomware gangs to target RDP,” he comments Jiří Kropáč, Head of Threat Detection Labs at ESET.
Other significant trends observed in the third quarter reveal the resurgence of cryptominers, with the return of Emotet after months of inactivity, and the increase in banking malware following the release of the source code of the infamous Cerberus mobile banking trojan.
ESET's Q3 2020 Threat Report also reviewed analysis progress and key findings from researchers. Among the multiple findings obtained, the following were discovered: a greater number of Wi-FI chips vulnerable to bugs similar to those of KrØØk; Mac malware bundled with cryptocurrency trading app exposed; CDRThief detected affecting Linux VoIP softswitches; in-depth KryptoCibule, a triple threat for cryptocurrencies.
The Report also examined operations leveraging malicious MAXScript, the spread of Latin American banking Trojans in Europe, new activities by the TA410 cybercriminal group, and an update on the Gamaredon group's tools.
In addition to these findings, the report also summarizes ESET experts' numerous virtual talks from Q3, previews their participation in next quarter's events, and provides a summary of the company's contributions to the MITER ATT&CK knowledge base.
