One of the most efficient data centers in the world has gone even greener thanks to Vertiv's thermal management and power technologies
Vertiv, (NYSE: VRT), a global supplier of solutions for critical digital infrastructures and continuity solutions, and the Norwegian colococatar Green Mountain They have implemented cutting -edge technologies to further raise the efficiency and sustainability of one of the most green data centers in the world.
Located in a former structure born in a mountain, the DC-1 stavanger data center uses 100% renewable hydroelectric energy and is cooled with the water of the fjord which guarantees a temperature of 8 ° C throughout the year. Thanks to the unique position and the drastic reduction of cooling equipment, the structure has an emission of CO2 close to zero. However, like all data centers, it requires continuity groups (UPS) and thermal management systems to guarantee optimal uptime.
"Sustainability permeates all our activities and is one of the main factors that we take into consideration every time we build new colocation poles and implement new features," he said Alexander de Flon Rønning, Designing E Product Manager Di Green Mountain. "All customers can understand where the energy we use comes from, and this is for us a different different element of the highest level."
Giordano Albertazzi, president for Europe, the Middle East and Africa of Veriv, said in turn: “The Climate Neutral Data Center Pact, signed by the main European Cloud and Data Center operators, represents the latest in a series of commitments that the industry industry has made to reduce its environmental impact. An effective transition to a sustainable and digital future will require both the creation of new expenditure data centers and the update of the existing sites to exploit the most recent and efficient technologies. Vertiv is proud to support this commitment ".
After in -depth research, the managers of Green Mountain visited the Customer Experience Center in Italy to observe the top technologies in action and test their performance in any condition, including the most extreme. At the end of a careful disagreement, Green Mountain has chosen the perimeter of cooling water and high efficiency cooling units Vertiv™ Liebert® PCW, for a total installed refrigerator power of 5 MW. Liebert PCW provides high efficiency standards thanks to a combination of cutting -edge technologies and a design that optimizes the aerodynamics of all internal components. Vertiv was also chosen for another project implemented in parallel, providing several UPS systems Liebert® EXL S1 Use lithium -ion backup batteries, an alternative of longer lasting the traditional VLO batteries systems.
"For Green Mountain, the sustainability of the products, as well as that of the supplier companies, is a key factor. The veritivo technologies are the most efficient from an energy point of view I have ever seen and will further improve our overall sustainability, already very high," commented De Flon Rønning. In addition, the vertiv systems are extremely compact. "Since our data center is dug in a mountain we have no extra environments," said De Flon Rønning. "In fact, we could not obtain further space in the mountain for the new equipment".
"Managing the project during Covid-19 was difficult," said De Flon Rønning again. "We were afraid that all the factories and transport companies remain closed. Fortunately, Vertiv also joined us in this case, helping us, among other things, to monitor the shipments, ensuring that the equipment were delivered without problems despite the closed borders and logistical challenges. Without this help from the vertiv we could not have completed the project in the scheduled times".
"Also in view of future projects we will carefully consider technologies for Vertiva Data Center," has ensured De Flon Rønning. "In fact, when we select a partner we do it in a long -term strategic perspective, to set lasting relationships."
Second The International Agency for Renewable Energies (Irena) [1], [2], [3], the data centers today play a central role as they represent the epicenter of technological innovation, energy efficiency, renewable energies: in fact of the new digital economy. Providers like Green Mountain can be considered pioneers of a new model of sustainable energy consumption, and represent an example to follow for other industrial sectors.
