Martell most recently held the position of Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Officer (CDAO) for the U.S. Department of Defense. In this role, he was the senior official responsible for accelerating the adoption of data, analytics, digital solutions and AI functions for decision-making advantages across the department, expertly leading the Department of Defense in the rapidly evolving field of AI. The CDAO office, of which Martell was the first leader, was created to increase digital and AI strategy development and policymaking, while ensuring mission unity and tighter integration for the department's enterprise-wide data, AI and information technology organizations.
Before joining the Department of Defense, Martell held several senior roles at some of the best-known technology companies. At Lyft, he served as Head of Machine Learning, where he designed and built a cutting-edge machine learning platform that enabled Lyft's engineering team to rapidly build and deploy ML models using large-scale, new, and continuous statistical programs. From 2018 to 2020, Martell was Dropbox's Head of Machine Intelligence, responsible for all machine learning-related activities, including establishing the overall vision, leveraging ML analytics, and communicating the ML strategy clearly and concisely across the organization. Prior to that, Martell led a number of AI teams and market initiatives at LinkedIn. He was also a tenured professor of Computer Science at the Naval Postgraduate School, specializing in natural language processing. Martell's extensive knowledge of statistical principles and methodologies has been demonstrated by his numerous patents, including a hybrid classification system patented in 2021 and a system and method for encrypting data in images patented in 2008.
"The speed and scale that Cohesity has achieved in recent years is evidence of the incredible technology platform that the company has built at the intersection of multi-cloud, security and AI for the future of data protection. My role will be to accelerate internal innovation and externalize the AI innovations achieved by Cohesity, which are second to those of any other company", he commented Craig Martell, Chief Technology Officer di Cohesity. “I am honored to join Sanjay and the talented team he has assembled to accelerate the company's journey in advancing AI and Machine Learning capabilities that are critical to addressing key enterprise data challenges.”
“AI represents a huge opportunity and a huge competitive advantage for Cohesity. The launch of Cohesity Gaia – with its first-to-market and patent-pending innovations – was the first step in our strategy,” he explained Lake Poonen, president in CEO in Cohesite. "The addition of an industry pioneer of Craig's caliber, who has led an AI agenda at the highest levels of both public and private organizations, complements and strengthens our executive leadership team with security, multicloud and AI expertise.
