  1. The average density of rack remains stable ... but: While average rack density likely reflects marginal improvements at best, the surge in advanced artificial intelligence (AI) applications and workloads, such as machine learning and deep learning, will make a range of high-performance computing necessary and more common. Vertiv experts anticipate requests with these specifications in the areas of defense, advanced analytics and manufacturing for 2020, laying the foundation for more widespread adoption in 2021 and beyond. These racks represent a tiny percentage of total racks today but, nevertheless, may present unusual power and cooling challenges that will need to be addressed. The increase in interest in direct liquid cooling is a response to the needs of high-performance computing.
  4. The pay off batteries. In 2016, experts Vertiv have predicted that lithium ions would begin to find space in the data center, an estimate that has proved true since, today, the lithium ions have a significant share in the UPS battery market. This share is growing and begins to spread to the edge sites, where the smaller footprint on the ground and reduced maintenance requirements represent an excellent combination. The next step will be the flexibility of exploitation Lithium-ion and other emerging alternatives for batteries, such as thin plates made of pure lead (Thin Plate Pure Lead, TPPL), to offset the costs. These issues, along with a more vigorous focus on environmental impact, are driving new approaches to hybrid architectures and the value of on-site computing and data storage. In China, some data centers have used 240V DC power in manufacturer-modified servers to improve efficiency and reduce costs. DC power has long been a theoretical goal for US data centers and it is not difficult to imagine that other countries will adopt the model adopted today in China.
