71% of respondents say current data centers don't meet all of their needs
Only 29% of data center decision makers say current facilities meet their needs, and just 6% say data centers are being upgraded ahead of their actual needs. These are just some of the findings included in the new report Forbes Insights e Vertiv (NYSE: VRT). “The Modern Data Center: How IT is Adapting to New Technologies and Hyperconnectivity” (“The Modern Data Center: How IT Adapts to New Technologies and Hyperconnectivity”) which examines the results of a survey of 150 data center executives and engineers from various industries around the world.
The findings point to a lack of planning and preparation for today's evolving data center ecosystem, with the inevitable contrast noted between executives and engineers: 11% of executives say data centers are being upgraded ahead of current needs, while only 1% of engineers confirm the same position.
“As the modern data center evolves to integrate enterprise resources, cloud and edge devices, in-depth planning and detailed forecasting are required to meet computing requirements and business objectives,” said Martin Olsen, vice president of Global Edge Systems for Vertiv. “It is clear, however, that many organizations have fallen behind on this front, so we expect considerable investment and activity among companies trying to catch up and stay ahead of the changes.”
Other significant results emerging from the survey:
- 92% of CIOs and CTOs say their business will require faster download and response times in the near future.
- 63% say they are always struggling to meet their bandwidth needs.
- Security (45%) and bandwidth (43%) are the two areas most in need of updates.
- Security (43%), backup and disaster preparedness (33%), ability to deploy new technologies (28%) and bandwidth (27%) were the most commonly identified capabilities that will give companies a competitive advantage.
- Respondents are optimistic about data centers that can self-configure and repair themselves. In fact, 24% said that more than half of their data centers will be able to self-configure by 2025 while 32% said that more than half of their data centers will be able to self-repair.
