Research conducted by Omdia reveals that the global market for prefabricated modular data centers, from Edge to Core, has risen well over 65%
Vertiv (NYSE: VRT), a global provider of solutions for critical digital infrastructure, has been ranked by technology analytics firm Omdia as one of the leading providers in the prefabricated modular data center (PFM) market, achieving the second highest market share worldwide. The research just published has shown that the adoption of scalable infrastructures and other features are driving significant growth in the implementation of PFM solutions in all geographic areas.
The Omdia report, Prefabricated Modular Data Centers, released in early 2020 and based on 2018 and 2019 data, set PFM sales value at more than $ 1.2 billion in 2018, with implementation growth of more than 65% for 2019. The team of analysts attributed this strong growth to several factors, including scalability, the benefits of off-site manufacturing and integration, and speed of deployment.
Lucas Beran, Principal Analyst for Cloud and Data Center Research at Omdia and the author of the report, identified speed of deployment as the primary driving factor for many data center owners and operators. “Rapid data growth and insatiable demand for computing is driving the exponential growth of data centers. Since a traditional data center takes 18-24 months to deploy, a faster solution is often needed,” he said. “On average, prefabricated modular data center providers can build a viable solution in four to six months.”
The Omdia report defined a series of different types of PFM data centers with different use cases, including specific projects for IT, infrastructures and so-called all-in-one modules (with IT infrastructures, supply, e cooling integrate) which are commonly used in Education, Industrial and Healthcare sectors, as well as in remote and complex environments. According to Omdia, demand for Edge Computing is driving the adoption of all-in-one modules for Edge locations that require modest data center availability close to end users. The “plug and play” approach has the advantage not only of reducing the time for startup and commissioning to a few days instead of weeks or months, but also of reducing possible problems related to stability, since the components are pre-assembled. -integrated and pre-tested off-site.
As described in the report, Vertiv's PFM projects include a range of different offerings to meet specific customer needs, such as Vertiv™ SmartMod™ - a range of completely self-contained PFM products, easily configurable and ready to order, which allow you to quickly implement the new data center space. SmartMod projects have recently been awarded with the TIER-Ready assessment assigned by the Uptime Institute for performance resilience in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), which also allows Vertiv to sell Certification Institute Tier Certification of Built Facilities (TCCF) services with modular TIER-Ready units, thereby providing the benefits of full-level certification directly to customers. Vertiv also provides fully customized PFM solutions, which include design, project management and system integration.
