Vertiv presents the first solution proposed by a single vendor that offers network flexibility, power stability and unified management

The new Dynamic Grid Support feature, combined with the Vertiv™ Liebert® EXL UPS S1 and with lithium ion battery technologies, it saves around 1 million euros per year for a flexible load of 10 MW as estimated by Enel X for an Irish customer

Vertiv, (NYSE: VRT), a global provider of critical digital infrastructure and uninterruptible power solutions, introduced a new feature for dynamic network support for uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) Vertiv™ Liebert® EXL S1. Combined with the lithium-ion battery cabinet Vertiv™ HPL, represents the first integrated solution from a single vendor that combines network support, UPS and lithium-ion batteries.

Available in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), the UPS Vertiv™ Liebert® EXL S1 with Dynamic Grid Support functionality enables the most energy-intensive industries to use UPS systems proactively. Renewable energy sources are gaining ground compared to conventional ones, but still present critical issues in terms of stability. To achieve the objectives of environmental sustainability and cost reduction that everyone hopes for, new storage systems are therefore necessary. The use of the UPS with Dynamic Grid Support and lithium ion batteries represents an important step forward in the right direction, as it guarantees a constant supply even during phases of grid instability that can result from the use of renewables.

The Vertiv lithium-ion battery cabinet™HPL, already launched in North America and soon available in EMEA, is compatible with most Vertiv three-phase UPS systems. Vertiv was one of the first companies to adopt lithium-ion batteries for data center environments and today, with Vertiv HPL, it introduces further improvements in terms of user interfaces, integrated controls and ease of maintenance aimed specifically at the latest generation data centers.

Giovanni Zanei, AC Power global offering management director at Vertiv, said: "As digitalisation continues to grow around the world we must support our customers in the adoption of alternative network technologies, while helping them to safeguard the investments made in the past. It is an approach that looks both at business and at safeguarding the planet, taking into account that the optimization of digital infrastructures is of primary importance in the fight against climate change. We want to be an active part of the solution".

"The implementation of the Liebert UPS® EXL S1 with Dynamic Grid Support and lithium-ion batteries, for example, allows participation in the Irish DS3 program which aims to provide a safe and sustainable electricity system, predicting savings of around 1 million euros per year for a flexible load of 10 MW", said John Byrne, head of UK & Ireland operations of Enel

Data centers and other critical infrastructures such as telecommunications networks, manufacturing industries, airports and the IoT world generally play a leading role in the field of energy efficiency aimed at reducing environmental impact and costs without prejudice to the business, as underlined a recent IEA report. The sector industry can make its contribution to protecting the environment by adopting more flexible approaches and processes, such as moving workloads between accumulators that use different energy sources - renewable and traditional.

Liebert® EXL S1 with Dynamic Grid Support regulates the static and dynamic frequency, controlling the input and output power and battery charging based on the frequency activation thresholds. The application also supports demand management services aimed at optimizing the management of energy flows between the existing sources.

Dedicated controls maintain the battery energy needed to support the critical load in the event of an outage. When Dynamic Grid Support is activated, the UPS responds quickly to grid controller inputs. The response time between the detection of a frequency change generated by the controller and the moment in which the UPS supplies the requested power does not exceed 500 milliseconds. This ensures a high level of protection for business critical applications thanks to constant power supply and helps network operators stabilize frequency variations that occur when the use of alternative energy sources increases.
