Recent Ivanti Study Finds The Biggest Challenge For IT Departments Is Keeping Up With Digital Transformation By Retaining Talent In Technical Roles

by Grandangolo Communications / Wednesday, 12 January 2022 / Published in Ivanti

Having 50% of IT services automated indicates IT as a crucial factor for company growth and strategy

Ivanti Inc., provider of the Neurons automation platform that discovers, manages, protects and supports IT assets from the cloud to the edge, presents the results of a recent survey of IT professionals, which found that keeping pace with digital transformation (32%) and retaining talent in technical roles (26%) are the biggest challenges their organizations face. Furthermore, according to 61% of respondents, IT departments are fundamental to an organization's growth and business strategy. However, despite great support from IT leaders, 72% of respondents reported losing team members, with 41% attributing the cause to too high a workload.

The other reasons included:

  • Unrealistic expectations placed on the team (34%)
  • Lack of executive support (32%)
  • Remote working was not an option (28%)
  • Leadership hesitation in adopting automation (26%)
  • Lack of the correct technology to effectively do their job (24%)

The survey revealed a discrepancy between C-Suite/Vice Presidents and Managers/Directors, demonstrated by the fact that for 19% of the former and 27% of the latter, IT departments are seen only as a cost center.

The pandemic has accelerated the adoption of remote working arrangements, with two-thirds of decision makers (67%) reporting they have accelerated their development plans or increased the adoption of automated IT services. In this context, it emerged that only 1% of decision makers have already implemented the adoption of these solutions. Today, the Everywhere Workplace requires employees to connect multiple devices to corporate networks, data and services, creating a lot of pressure on IT teams that could be alleviated by implementing automated services. 55% of respondents say automated IT processes save departments 1-8 hours per service request. In fact, in organizations where more than 50% of requests are automated, the time saved per request has reached more than 16 hours.

“Employees work differently than in previous years, and will continue to do so following the pandemic,” he said Nayaki Nayyar, President and Chief Product Officer of Ivanti. "The workloads and pressure placed on IT teams are set to increase. The only way to partially alleviate these pressures while retaining technical talent is to implement automation across IT services to free up team members to focus on the tasks that move the business forward."

Organizations with more than 50% IT services consider the IT department as a crucial factor for the organization's growth strategy and business development (74%), demonstrating the value of automation. Of these, only 32% believe that the executive team only looks to the IT department for troubleshooting, compared to 47% of all respondents.

Routine tasks consume IT resources and service desks, preventing team members from focusing on more impactful strategic projects. Every minute saved corresponds to 60 seconds that can be used to reallocate resources to strategic and innovative projects and important new business challenges. Automation simplifies the management of complex hybrid environments by automating infrastructure, cloud and automation processes to support different tasks.

Ivanti surveyed 250 enterprise IT professionals in North America, APAC and EMEA during August-October 2021.
