The new study highlights an alarming trend: 49% of software is unused
Nexthink, a leader in digital employee experience management (DEX) software solutions, has released the findings of a new report: How much do companies squander on unused software licenses? The study found that approximately half (49.96%) of all software installed in the company is not used by employees. The results come from the analysis of over 6 million business contexts divided into 8 different industrial areas and 12 regions around the world. To determine these results, data relating to the first months of implementation of the Nexthink solution were taken into consideration to establish the reference standard of what a medium-sized company faces when it does not have full visibility on software licenses.
“The new findings highlight the most pervasive problem companies face in 2023: the need to achieve a sustainable level of efficiency,” he said. Donatella Derosa, Enterprise Account Manager Italy of Nexthink. “Haphazard or unreasonable deactivation of licenses can lead to higher costs in the medium term. Only when the IT team has access to all the information about who's using licenses, what's not being used, what's working, and what needs replacing, will they see and leverage increased efficiencies in a sustainable and recurring way.”
By examining more than 30 of the most popular software, the report found an average license cost per user per month (ranging from $8 to $83 per user) and calculated it based on unused software licenses that were found in the Nexthink database which includes 6 million users. It turned out that these licenses cost businesses about $45 million a month, or about half a billion a year. It's not the only savings opportunity for companies: the report found that many employees use different applications for the same purpose. For example, approximately 37% of employees use 3 browser applications to access SaaS tools and the Internet, while 31% use 2 different collaboration tools.
The report's findings also highlighted trends in application usage, indicating that the most used applications were (+50%)
- Slack
- Teams
- Zoom
- Webex host
- Asana
Mentre, quelle che non sono state regolarmente utilizzate sono (<15%)
- Tableau
- Trello
- App Notion
- Spot fire
- BlueJeans
The study was proposed after the platform was launched Nexthink Infinity which includes the tool Collaboration Experience, che introduce le funzionalità “See, Diagnose & Fix”, la telemetria avanzata e gli insight ai principali strumenti di collaborazione come Microsoft Teams e Zoom. Collaboration Experience permette ai clienti di avere un’esperienza e una connessione ottimale e di qualità su oltre 1,7 milioni di riunioni al giorno.
