Vertiv will build a 150 MW data center powered by renewable energy and equipped with an interactive network to support the development of the colocation services provider
Vertiv, (NYSE: VRT), a global provider of critical digital infrastructure and continuity solutions, announces the formation of a new legal entity in Norway, further strengthening its partnership with colocation provider Green Mountain and supporting its rapid growth in Northern Europe. This strategic decision confirms Vertiv's commitment to ensuring sustainable and scalable infrastructures to meet the ever-increasing demands of companies and end users.
As part of new expansion plans, Green Mountain has embarked on the ambitious OSL2-Hamar project which involves the construction of a latest generation data center in Hamar, Norway. Recognized as one of the greenest providers in the sector, the OSL2-Hamar hub will be powered by 90 MW of renewable hydroelectric energy, with the possibility of increasing power up to 150 MW in the future, and will be able to provide balancing services to support the network. The installation of the first 30 MW building is expected by November 2023.
“The OSL2-Hamar project is a demanding challenge that requires collective efforts and strong partnerships, so we express our sincere thanks to Vertiv for their exceptional support,” said Svein Atle Hagaseth, CEO of Green Mountain. “Vertiv’s ongoing commitment and expertise are critical to the success of this initiative, and we believe their partnership is important in shaping the future of eco-friendly data centers.”
“By strengthening our operations in Norway and supporting Green Mountain's extraordinary growth in Northern Europe, Vertiv is proud to play a key role in providing efficient and scalable infrastructure solutions and services,” commented Karsten Winther, president EMEA at Vertiv. "This collaboration is a testament to our commitment to providing cutting-edge data center technologies and exceptional customer service. Together, we are shaping the future of data centers while driving innovation, greater efficiency and business development."
Green Mountain boasts impressive credentials, including a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) ratio of 1.25, 100% hydroelectric power sources, Tier III certifications, and an impeccable record of 100% uptime and SLA compliance. Furthermore, the data center structure integrates innovative and low environmental impact features, such as experimental projects on the use of waste heat for fish farming, circular economy initiatives, intelligent lighting and absolutely innovative cooling solutions.
During its recent expansion, Green Mountain implemented Vertiv™ Liebert® EXL S1 UPSs with Dynamic Grid Support and advanced battery storage systems, supporting on-site hydropower adoption and enabling grid balancing services. Each Green Mountain site is carefully designed and tailored to meet specific customer needs, and to continually raise the bar for energy efficiency and sustainability initiatives.
“We are proud to be at the forefront of sustainability and data protection and are committed to sharing our expertise in the market to help create balanced delivery models and sustainable solutions,” added Hagaseth. "Our strategy is to establish more locations in Norway, making our country a hub for new deployments. With the expected increase in business workloads and global digitalisation, we are determined to meet these needs with long-term capabilities."
Vertiv is a trusted partner of Green Mountain since 2020, and provides highly efficient thermal management and power solutions, also in response to the latest challenges posed by the global pandemic. “Managing implementations during Covid-19 has been extremely difficult,” Hagaseth acknowledged. "Fortunately, Vertiv was able to help us overcome logistical difficulties, tracking shipments and ensuring delivery of equipment despite closed borders. Vertiv has certainly earned our trust and is now one of our go-to partners for data center solutions."
