The objectives are to improve sustainability, enhance capacity and help make the grid more stable
Vertiv, (NYSE: VRT), a global provider of critical digital infrastructure and continuity solutions, together with Conapt, one of Sweden's leading providers of colocation services, e Fever Energy, one of the protagonists in grid support technologies, announce the introduction of Dynamic Grid Support in Conapto's activities. Harnessing the energy of Vertiv™ Liebert® EXL S1, an innovative uninterruptible power supply (UPS) that guarantees an integrated solution for critical power protection and network support features, this revolutionary initiative aims to promote greater sustainability through maximum UPS energy efficiency and the reduction of CO₂ emissions through the use of alternative energy sources.
As continued digitalisation accelerates the growth of Sweden's digital infrastructure, the demand for stable, reliable and sustainable energy sources has also increased. Recognizing this need, Vertiv, Conapto and Fever Energy are collaborating to give data centers the opportunity to play an active role in grid stabilization while unlocking new revenue streams.
Thanks to the innovative Dynamic Grid Support function of the UPS, Conapto can contribute to the stability of the electricity grid by intervening in the fast frequency response (FFR) and frequency containment reserve demand (FCR-D) phases. Vertiv's solution optimizes UPS capabilities and uses lithium-ion storage batteries, allowing it to support power during peak demand without having to make significant changes to the infrastructure. By providing regular static and dynamic frequency, along with demand management capabilities, the UPS contributes to grid stability and efficient use of resources, supporting the integration of alternative sources, such as wind, water and solar, into the energy ecosystem.
Conapto selected the Vertiv™ Liebert® EXL S1 UPS system, due to its ability to reduce energy consumption compared to less efficient alternative solutions. This innovative solution, supported by lithium ion battery technology, offers high performance in a small footprint, allowing data centers to maximize the number of racks and servers and enabling operational efficiency of up to 99%.
The joint initiative will be divided into two main phases. First, existing Conapto facilities acquired in 2022 are now being optimized for grid support, with customized UPS units for end users to seamlessly integrate into the system. Furthermore, the same solution is currently being implemented at Conapto locations in Stockholm 4 South, to improve network performance and resilience.
Karsten Winther, president of Vertiv in Europe, Middle East and Africa, says: "The collaboration between Vertiv, Conapto and Fever Energy is a significant milestone in the data center industry and builds on a 15-year partnership with Conapto. With the introduction of Dynamic Grid Support, we enable Conapto to not only improve the operational efficiency of its data centers, but also contribute to grid stability and sustainability when combined with energy alternatives, marking a significant step forward in the evolution of critical digital infrastructures.”
Stefan Nilsson, Chief Commercial Officer at Conapto, says: "In line with Conapto's commitment to sustainability and supporting society, we believe that data centers should not only consume energy, but can also play an active role in supporting the grid. By introducing Dynamic Grid Support, we can help reduce CO₂ emissions by allowing more renewables to be added to the energy mix. We can also generate additional capacity for our customers and deploy it much more quickly. The partnership with Vertiv and Fever Energy is testament to this. this will, as we work to create a more resilient and sustainable digital infrastructure for Sweden and beyond.”
