Vertiv partners with Intel to build a Liquid Cooled solution for the Intel® Gaudi®3 AI Accelerator platform

by Grandangolo Communications / Tuesday, 12 December 2023 / Published in Vertiv

Intel's next-generation AI accelerators will be supported by Vertiv™ liquid-cooled data center infrastructure solutions to help organizations accelerate the transition to AI and achieve sustainability goals

Vertiv, (NYSE: VRT), a global provider of critical digital infrastructure and uninterruptible power solutions, announced that it is partnering with Intel (Nasdaq: INTC), a global leader in disruptive technologies, to provide a liquid cooling solution that will support Intel's breakthrough new Gaudi3 AI accelerator, scheduled to launch in 2024. Artificial intelligence applications and high-performance computing generate high amounts of heat, and businesses are increasingly turning to liquid cooling solutions for more efficient cooling alternatives and eco-friendly.

The Intel Gaudi3 AI accelerator will enable both liquid- and air-cooled servers, supported by Vertiv™'s two-phase pump (P2P) cooling infrastructure. The liquid-cooled solution was tested up to 160kW of accelerator power using system water from 17°C to 45°C (62.6°F to 113°F). The air-cooled solution has been tested up to 40kW of thermal capacity and can be used in data centers with environments as hot as 35°C (95°F). This direct P2P refrigerant-based medium pressure cooling solution will help customers harness heat and hot water, cool spaces with air, and reduce energy (PUE) and water (WUE) consumption and total cost of ownership (TCO).

“The Intel Gaudi3 AI accelerator is the perfect fit for a collaboration between Vertiv and Intel,” said John Niemann, SVP global thermal line of business at Vertiv. "Vertiv continues to expand its portfolio of liquid cooling solutions to support the leaders of next-generation AI technologies, such as Intel. Vertiv supports customers in the process of adopting AI quickly and reliably, while helping them meet their sustainability goals."

“The processing required for AI workloads has placed an emphasis on performance, cost and energy efficiency as paramount considerations for today's businesses,” said Devdatta Kulkarni, principal engineer & lead thermal engineer for the project at Intel. “To support the power and heat flow growth of next-generation accelerators, Intel is working with Vertiv and other ecosystem partners to deliver an innovative cooling solution that will be critical to helping customers meet critical sustainability goals.”
