Vertiv adds new direct expansion cooling unit to help reduce CO₂ emissions

Vertiv™ Liebert® PDX range expands with low GWP, non-flammable refrigerant in EMEA region

Vertiv, (NYSE: VRT), a global provider of critical digital infrastructure and continuity solutions, introduced new Direct Expansion Edge Drives Vertiv™ Liebert® PDX-PAM, highly efficient and equipped with a low environmental impact (GWP) and non-flammable R513A refrigerant. Available immediately in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), the system is designed to operate with an eco-friendly refrigerant (compared to traditional refrigerants) to enable greater efficiency, reliability and maximum installation flexibility.

Liebert® PDX-PAM enables data center operators to comply with the European F-Gas Regulation 2024/573 and pursue pressing sustainability goals. The non-flammable refrigerant R513A offers a GWP reduction of up to 70% compared to traditional R410A, without penalizing safety or reliability. No additional safety devices are required, as is the case with units using flammable refrigerants, which helps reduce installation costs and investment expenses (CAPEX).

“In the era where efficiency and reliability are paramount, we understand the pressing need to provide customers with eco-friendly alternatives to stay ahead of regulatory requirements and have cutting-edge innovations,” said Karsten Winther, president of Vertiv in Europe, Middle East and Africa. “With this new solution we don't just respond to customers' current sustainability goals, but we actively innovate and anticipate the future of cooling technologies, defining new levels of reliability and efficiency for the sector.”

Liebert PDX-PAM is available in power ratings from 10 kW to 80 kW with a wide range of airflow configurations, options and accessories, making the unit easily adaptable to different installation needs, starting from small to medium-sized data centers, including edge computing applications, UPS and battery rooms. Together with Liebert PDX-PAM units, a wide choice of cooling solutions are available to manage heat loss to the outside, depending on the specific system configuration.

Vertiv is a leader in innovation with Liebert® PDX-PAM units, low GWP, non-flammable R513A refrigerant solutions, inverter-driven brushless motor compressors, staged coil design with innovative patent-pending filter, electronic expansion valves and latest generation electronically commutated (EC) fans, all included as standard features. The integrated Vertiv™ Liebert® iCOM™ controller allows for perfect synchronization of these components, allowing for complete remodulation of performance. In this way, the Liebert® PDX-PAM unit can adapt to changing operating conditions and thermal load efficiently and reliably. The ability to provide complete and continuous remodulation significantly reduces energy consumption by offering a more economical solution, thanks to greater efficiency at part load and precise monitoring of machine operation, which facilitates performance control and more timely and effective maintenance, favoring predictive maintenance actions.

“The introduction of low-GWP refrigerants for direct expansion systems marks a significant advancement in sustainable air cooling technology,” said Lucas Beran, research director at Dell’Oro Group. By using low GWP and non-flammable refrigerants, Vertiv complies with the requirements of the EU F-Gas Regulation and aims to reduce the carbon footprint without compromising safety or efficiency. This innovation is important for data center operators who want to pursue sustainability goals while maintaining high operational standards.”
